Pass the Aux is a multimedia project produced by the students of Seattle University's "Gender, Equality, and Freedom of Expression" class. Taught by Dr. Caitlin Carlson, this class takes a critical look at the United State's First Amendment in order to analyze just how universal the amendment is in practice.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
"The purpose of this course is to explore the relationship between gender and freedom of expression. We’ll begin by developing a shared understanding of the process of misogyny and the concept of intersectionality. Next, we’ll explore issues of free expression in the United States. We’ll read about the ways in which the First Amendment has been (mis)used to uphold white male supremacy. We’ll also look at major issues impacting women’s free expression such as pornography, revenge porn, and online harassment. Throughout the exploration of these topics, you’ll read the work of important scholars and then take what you’ve learned and use it to develop real-world solutions to address these issues. The final unit of the course will focus on gender in media. We’ll look at how ownership impacts content and explore the nature of women’s representation in media and how that shapes dominant cultural ideology."
